The Atlantic Cup, September 2024

The inaugural Atlantic cup set sail on September 7th, 2024

RACE 1

The first race was from Foynes to Fenit in a strong westerly force 6 wind. With safety protocols in place the intrepid sailors set out. Five boats started but one retired at Kilstiffen, cold and wet crew, meant safety first and they turned back. Those who continued were not just in the Atlantic cup but racing for the Foynes to Fenit trophy standard echo. “Big deal” showing their offshore experience, won both the first leg of the Atlantic cup and the Foynes to Fenit cup.

RACE 2

Four boats started in Fenit and raced to Kilrush.  This time the weather was light winds and sunshine. Once again “Big Deal” taking the spoils with “Elantic” in close second by just 30 seconds.

RACE 3

Saw the fleet head out from Cappagh pier to Littor buoy and finish in Foynes at the club line. “Big Deal” took the final race and were the overall winners of the first Atlantic cup.

Everyone agreed that it was a well-executed series. Great sailing and a series worth repeating next year. The under 25’s from Foynes and Galway were well represented for all 3 races.
